THE ORANGE PROJECT

‘The Orange Project’ is a manifest of Yasmin Shah’s most recent work. Using multidisciplinary ways of creating art, Yasmin employs a mixture of painting, photography, digital media and sculpture to consider how colour can be used as a foundation to understand and dissect elements of her own cultural background and identity.

Yasmin’s work is largely based off an archive of photographs that she has taken in recent years, documenting intimate moments where she and her siblings have been absorbed into the cultures of her family. This page gives an insight into the complexities of a variety of different influences she embraces, being of Sicilian, Greek and Pakistani descent. Most of the images within the archive are taken in Corfu and Sicily, where she often visits with her family.

Yasmin proposes that each individual has their own distinctive connection with colour, based on their own life experiences. Through examining her own relationship with orange during this project, Yasmin has created a series of paintings inspired by her inquiry into this warm colour, that she associates with happiness and love.

In the painting ‘My Brother At Home’, Yasmin has utilised the colour orange as a mechanism to also convey a sense of comfort and peace. Yasmin allows the viewer to gain access into her life through an orange lens, which is continued within her archive of photographs, all of which have been digitally manipulated with an orange tint. This connects the colour orange to these important moments with her family.
